Census officials say New York City grew by 167,000 people to 8.2 million. Mayor Michael Bloomberg says he believes census workers missed many immigrants and undercounted.

Buffalo lost 10.7 percent of its population, Rochester lost 4.2 percent and Syracuse lost 1.5 percent of its population.

The 2010 numbers released Thursday will be used to guide officials drawing New York’s congressional and state legislative districts for the next decade. New York’s current 29-member House delegation will drop to 27, its lowest level since 1823.

The U.S. Census Bureau in December reported that the state’s population grew slightly in the past decade to 19.4 million

What do you expect? The way we have been treated here in New York State, I would not be surprised if a lot of people moved to other States and countries. For both economic, tax wise, and Health reasons for starters!!

Loss of jobs, additional taxes & fees, higher cost of basic essentials such as food and housing, less services – NYC doesn’t seem like it has a flourishing economy these days, it wouldn’t surprise me if the census count was closer to reality than Bloomberg’s protestation would have us believe.

I don’t know how people live in the outer boroughs, with the traffic, noise, pollution, unclean streets, lack of city services, lack of parking, streets with potholes, inferior garbage collection, etc. At least, in the upscale areas of Manhattan, there are well lighted streets at night, and there are fairly good city services, such as an adequate police presence, which is lacking in the other boroughs.

Could these discrepancies have been caused by the large number of chareidi Jews who defied dina d’malchusa by refusing to complete the census forms?

Over here, in the UK, we are to complete our census forms on Sunday next. It will be interesting to see of the same phenomenon occurs here as well.
