Known only as Carmen, the man, who has refused to reveal his full name decided to put his ‘status symbol’ (212)-5XX-9000 number up for grabs a year ago – and has already received 26 offers.
And he says the money raised will help care for his 98-year-old mother who suffers from dementia.
He told the New York Daily News: ‘Individuals come because they don’t want to get stuck with a 347 or 646 from the phone company, which makes them look like they are new to the city.
‘Then you have corporations or businesses that come to us because they have a reputation and they want to stand out. They don’t want to look like they just set up shop.’
The import of the “212” number originated because of the rotary phone (least amount of effort to dial). Youts today are not aware of old devices such as the rotary phone, typeriter or grammer.
His mom will have to share whatever money she gets with whomever buys this telephone number…you have to be demented to pay a million dollars for a 212 phone number.
I see this as a good oportunity for the city to raise money. The city probably has thousands of 212 numbers which they can sell since the only way to reach them now is by calling 311.
In a few years from now people won’t know any difference between 646, 347 or 212 so the city better sell them now before they become worthless
anybody knows how much he is getting I will sell, mine if the price is right
My 718 number for sale $25,000.00 call today and receive a off
it is not only the “212” number; it is because it ends in “9000” which is also extremely choshiv. 212.540.9000 would be a great number for a big company to have
A 212 number that ends in 000 is extremely valuable. I wouldnt even use a law firm that doesnt have a phone number that ends in 000.
All these new firms opening up with a manhattan address,,,, I can tell instantly just by looking at the phone number
that numbers worth at least 100,000$
I don’t live in Manhattan but I got a 212 number just last year from MagicJack. Total cost was $39.95 and that includes the phone service for a year.
