Israel – 17 Yeshivas to Lose State Funding, Asked to Return Money

    Photo illustrationIsrael – The Education and Finance Ministries have said that 17 out of 1,500 yeshivas reviewed by the state will not receive further financial support, and are requested to return funds received in the last period, Israel Radio reported Monday.

    Representatives from the Treasury and Education Ministry said that these 17 yeshivas showed serious deficiencies, and were requested to resolve them prior to receiving more subsidies.

    I’m surprised the number is that small, given how poorly the adminisration and record keeping is done at many yeshivos. Either things have gotten a lot better or the auditing was done at a very low standard of quality control and many compliance issues were excused. Anyway, getting the money back from these 17 should send a warning to the others to improve their administration which is just as important as the quality of the chinuch and lamdus.
