Geneva – A U.N. official says the retired South African judge who authored a damning report on Israel’s 2009 incursion into Gaza must formally request the document to be withdrawn before it can be repealed as Israel has demanded.

Richard Goldstone wrote in the Washington Post over the weekend he was reconsidering the report’s conclusion that Israel deliberately targeted civilians during the three-week offensive against Palestinian militant group Hamas.
U.N. spokesman Cedric Sapey says “any request for action at our level would first require an official letter” by Goldstone on behalf of his four-member panel.
Sapey told The Associated Press on Monday that the U.N. Human Rights Council which commissioned the report has yet to receive such a request.
