The chain’s head office ordered the store to remove the hexagram-shaped Jewish symbol after a customer complained on Sunday.

But more complaints came after it was removed, prompting Metro to order it be put back up.

The original complaint was from a man who thought the star was religious propaganda, explained Marie-Claude Bacon, Metro director of corporate affairs.

Did the man who complained do the same to supermarkets and/or department stores that hang Xmas decorations that are also frequented by jews?

Here in Canada, my local “Metro” store charges outrageous prices for kosher items. For example, the big bottle of Kedem grape juice, which you guys in the U.S. can get for $2.99 on sale, usually goes for $11.99 up here. Metro has imposed HUGE price increases around Pesach; many in the Jewish community shop there. So to think that anyone had the audacity to remove the magen david for even five minutes makes my blood boil. Was it a dumb store manager or latent anti-semitism? Maybe I’ll be takin’ my business elsewhere…..

A CVS pharmacy store near me which has many Jewish customers did not have an iota of any Passover candies. Yet, it had quite a large display of Easter candies. Incidentally, the incident in Montreal doesn’t surprise me. Years ago, I used to use the service of Photo Finish on Newkirk Plaza, in Brooklyn. The owner was a Canadian Jew, originally from Montreal. He said that he left Montreal, because of the anti-semitism which existed there, and probably still continues to exist.

Although I can’t remark on the particular store, I do know that anti Semitism is not the Company’s policy because I have had wonderful experiences with them accommodating my needs concerning kashrut—-Just for the record—-

Before you Judge, which you should not, it is important to know all the facts. This morning, on the radio, the owner of the store said that moments after he took down the Magen David, he regretted his decision. It has been put back and he has apologized publically for doing so. Sometimes there is an action, then there is a reaction, then people think things over and then proceed correctly. So it is the final action that counts, he apologized and corrected the matter. None of us are perfect, yet if we correct our imperfections, then we become a mensch. Chag Sameach.

Typical Quebec mentality. “Anything but the Jews” is okay. No exaggeration, I experienced less Antisemitism in Ramallah.
