As part of the system redesign, the number of “police” placards will be cut by 84 percent to 261 and limited to police personnel.

The number of “official business” placards — distributed to executive agencies and the Legislature — will be reduced by more than 200 to 1993.

“Parking placards are not perks – period,” said Inspector General Ellen Biben in a news release. “These new policies intelligently transform the system from one that was flawed and ripe for abuse and to one that is transparent and will make individuals personally accountable for use of their placards.”

Cuomo’s changes also include an application and review process and a terms-of-use certification from those who use them.

    Misues could mean disciplinary action.

Placard redesigns will show the agency to which the car belongs and that car’s license plate.
