In 1985, Hosni Mubarek was instrumental in sneaking the hijackers of the Achille Lauro, along with the killers of Leon Klinghoffer, out of Egypt, on an Egyptian airliner, headed for Europe. Mubarek initially denied that the hijackers were in Egypt, and he tried to cover that incident up. However, when the terrorists’ plane was forced down by U.S. Navy fighter jets, Mubarek stated “Well, I guess that the American people are happy now”.
