(AP Photo/Seth Wenig)Yaphank, NY – The FBI will supply high-tech surveillance aircraft to authorities investigating a possible serial killer on New York’s Long Island later this week, a police official said Wednesday, after the discovery of 10 sets of human remains in recent months near a highway leading to the popular Jones Beach State Park.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer said federal investigators will supply both helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft equipped with special cameras that will scour more than 15 miles of the Ocean Parkway along a remote barrier island south of Long Island in search of additional victims.

The parkway is surrounded by a tangle of underbrush and evergreens that have proved difficult to maneuver on foot for cadaver dogs and officers. Volunteer firefighters with aerial ladders and even mounted police units have been brought in to assist with the search. On Wednesday, police divers searched the waters north of the parkway for possible victims.

It was in that thicket that police found the first four sets of remains in December. At least some of the remains were dumped just feet from the highway; others were found 90 feet or more into the underbrush. Six more sets of remains have been found in recent weeks, including two on Monday.

It’s a tragedy that with one exception, no one noticed these women were even missing.

I am familiar with that stretch of Ocean Parkway. It is about ten miles of very little but sand and bushes. There are some homes that are mostly if not entirely summer homes. Off season the area is desolate. At one time there was a Restaurant towards the east end of that strip near a community of a few homes, that place is long gone. It is a very easy place for some sick individual to do their dastardly work and not be seen.

Don’t expect this case to be cracked anytime soon if ever.
