PBS chief Paula Kerger tells The Associated Press that the federal budget deal retains most of the money that President Barack Obama had set aside for public television and radio stations — nearly $430 million.

Kerger said a lobbying effort that resulted in a half-million emails and also phone calls to congressional offices appears to have paid off. She said the public response “changed everything.”

The money is distributed to nearly 1,000 public television and radio stations across the country.

Kol hakovod to Obama and all the loyal NPR listeners who sucessfully battled to retain this vital funding for public broadcasting. Hopefully, the teabaggers will go after some really wasteful funding like the tens of billions we pay to subsidize oil and gas companies and big corporate farming operations.

I listen to classical music on NPR. The last commercial classical station in my area closed 20 years ago. I would not be able to enjoy this music if not for NPR.

I’m not sure if many of you here have actually WATCHED public television (Channel 13 in New York City), but they have a wide array of Jewish-themed shows on all the time (immigrant experiences, holidays, etc.). Are those shows too “left-wing” for you?
