The Democrat was sentenced Friday to 1 to 4 years in prison.

The 71-year-old pleaded guilty in October to a felony corruption charge. He admitted getting free travel and campaign contributions in exchange for helping a financier get to manage a $250 million share of the pension fund’s investment dollars.

Hevesi was the highest-ranking state official entangled in a sweeping probe of “pay-to-play” practices at the $141 billion pension fund.

Hevesi resigned in 2006 after pleading guilty to a felony for using state workers to chauffeur his wife. The pension case emerged after he left office.

Mr. Hevesi cheated the people of NYS and will have to pay. He will probably do just one year and aside from the shame still comes out ahead of most New Yorkers. Hevesi will continue to recieve his pension which is more money than a many people who work hard earn in a year. The laws regarding pension payments to public officials convicted of crimes should be re-done to eliminate those payments. The loss of a fat pension would be an appropriate punishment plus the jail time.

Hevesi is the grandson of the (reform) chief rabbi of hungary. It was hevesi that forced the swiss banks to return Jeiwhsh holocaust funds. And, by the way, NYC earned more money on its investments than under any other comptroller EVER. He, at 71, SHOULD have gotten a break.

I agree 100% with Allan (#4); we must have the same standards of justice for all, whether ultra frum, modern frum, conservative, reform, etc. After all, doesn’t our Pledge of Allegiance end with the words “and liberty and justice for all”.
