The tenant and other residents in the building were evacuated and firefighters were able to put out the flames. No one was hurt but the apartment sustained heavy damage.
use FLASHLIGHTS guys
There are a few of these incidents every year and fortunately most of them do not result in loss of life. However, its just a matter of time until c’v we have a tragedy. In simple term, while bedikas and biur chametz is a mitzvah, its NOT so important as to risk a fire if you cannot do it safely. Either do it in one of the communal fires that are done in many frum neighborhoods, or just throw the chametz in the regular trash and don’t worry about burning it.
To anonymous #3: (what happened to #2 ?) The man wasn’t doing biur chometz. Even though Eretz Yisroel is several hours ahead of us, they aren’t that much ahead, and noone does biur chametz in an apartment! It is done outdoors! The man was obviously doing bedikas chometz, not biur chometz.
I started using a flashlight a few years ago. In yeshiva I caught a bed on fire and almost caused a major incident. Besides, a flashlight is much or effective. The flashlight on my Android phone is perfect. Let’s be safe, use flashlights.
um, flashlights. this isn’t the 1850’s
Flashlight aher flashlight ahin, the halochoh says it must be done by the shine of a candle, if you can’t be careful enough don’t do it ,
