New York – Long Island Rail Road officials are asking Amtrak to change the way it handles track inspections after a poorly timed repair held up travelers during a busy Passover exodus out of Penn Station.

An Amtrak crew found problems with a rail joint under the East River on Monday afternoon, just as many passengers began to head out of town for the Jewish holiday. The LIRR, which uses the tunnels, canceled and delayed dozens of trains throughout the evening rush.
At times, Penn Station got so crowded that MTA police herded waiting customers outside. It took more than five hours for Amtrak to fix the problem.
On Tuesday, the LIRR apologized to passengers, called for Amtrak to do “a full review” of the incident and schedule inspections so that they don’t interfere with peak travel periods. It also said the national long-haul railroad should have staff “readily available” to do emergency repairs.

And what about the ones who were at work and are also Shomer Shabbos and Yom Tov? No big deal, you say; they should be mechalel Yom Tov because of the RRs?
