In the aftermath of the snowstorm debacle, Halloran trumpeted that Sanitation supervisors had told him the workers’ union had bollixed the cleanup to take revenge over Mayor Bloomberg’s labor policies.

His story, prominently played for days on end in the New York Post, drew national attention and scorn for the city. But every bit of it was a lie.

The Department of Investigation conducted a five-month probe into whether there was a job action. The inquiry entailed scores of interviews, an extensive review of videotapes and more.

As for big-mouthed, publicity-loving Halloran, DOI concluded that his account of being tipped off by supervisors was bogus to the core. The two men swore under oath that they had never told Halloran anything remotely like the fantastic tale that put him on the front page.

They also testified that Halloran attempted to badger them into supporting the slowdown fable – which they refused to do.

Halloran also purported to have other whistleblowers. He has refused to name them for the grand jury. Of course he did, because they surely do not exist. This guy is unfit for office.

While the report dismisses the slowdown, it certainly points to the ineptitude of higher lever staff at DS. The men in the trucks may be “New York’s Stronest” but the guys that ran the storm cleanup seem to have been New York’s Dumbest.

May I remind the VIN readers about the excellent job that VIN did during the snowstorm in showing how neglected the streets were. They interviewed a sanitation worker camped out in his truck who didn’t do any work for hours. They got many eyewitness accounts of people testifying about trucks plowing with their shovels up the same block for hours. The testimony under oath by these workers is a complete lie. There are many people who lie under oath. It means nothing. They had no choice but to lie. They have nothinhg to lose if they lie under oath. If they tell the truth they are in bigger trouble with their fellow workers, the city, and the union than if they lie under oath. I have seen police officers lie under oath in court and got away with it. Testifying under oath means nothing. This is a whitewash. In all the decades I lived in NYC I never saw such a terrible respose to a snowstorm. The facts speak for themselves. I don’t need two false testomonies to tell me what the facts on the ground revealed.

“His story, prominently played for days on end in the New York Post, drew national attention and scorn for the city.”

Don’t you people realize that the whole point of this “OP-ED” is to malign and try to embarrass the NY Post who rightfully heavily criticized the DOS for their intentional slowdown during the storm??

The Daily News and the Post have an ongoing contest over who can catch the other with more factual reporting mistakes!! They despise each other and the News couldn’t care less about the TRUE facts behind what happened.

The bottom line is though that all of us with a half brain KNOW that there indeed WAS an INTENTIONAL slow down and the probe is yet another bunch of crap and the results were totally manipulated by our dear mayor….

halloran did not lie. the sanitation workers lied. everyone in new york knows there was a slowdown. They must think we are really stupid.

I dont know or care who Hallaron is. The simple fact is that I and everyone else who lived through the storm knows there was a slowdown. I remember telling my son “its strange some of the plows are up.” This was before I was aware of a problem. There was no excuse that some blocks didn’t get plowed until 4-5 days after the storm. And the proof is one month later in the next big storm there were no problems.

I saw trucks going down my street with plows up when normally the plows are down. No job action? How stupid does the Daily News and the “Dept. of Investigation” think we are?

what do you all expect when the city investigates itself, it’s like me investigating myself for robbing a bank, “I didnt see anything.” Everyone knows for 4 days at least brooklyn and most areas weren’t touched and the wonderful people telling us to use public transportation didnt seem to know that half the trains werent running

This whitewash of the NYC Sanitation Dept. is typical of the whitewashing of various NYC agencies, whenever there is a problem. In 1968, when New York’s Finest went on a rampage (police riot), and literally beat and clubbed every student in sight at Columbia University (whether or not they were involved in law breaking), their actions were whitewashed by an investigatory commission. The Commission stated that “many of the police who were involved could not be identified”. Also, in 1971, when some bridge workers went on strike and sabotaged a number of bridges on the Belt Parkway, the miscreants were never brought to justice.
