Reinhard Burger, head of the Robert Koch Institute, says in addition to the 21 people killed in Germany and one in Sweden, another 2,153 have been sickened, including 627 people who have developed a rare complication that can cause kidney failure.

The Lower Saxony agriculture ministry, meanwhile, said locally grown beansprouts have been identified as the likely cause of the outbreak. Ministry spokesman Gert Hahne told The Associated Press on Sunday his agency is warning people to stop eating the sprouts, which are often used in mixed salads.

Sprouts are a known risk for e-coli. I assume this is because it is difficult to wash them thoroughly. I would not trust washing any vegetables that are suspect.
I wish hatzlocho and refuah shelemah to all the victims, many of which will be on dialysis from now on.

I remember when the problem with unexamined broccoli was publicized, and when the strawberry thrip issue arose, and now the fish, how many people shraied chai vekayom that the halacha fanatics are taking away all our healthy food. So, to those people, I have a modest suggestion: Sprouts are very healthy. Don’t let these medical fanatics take away your sprouts. Just go ahead and continue eating them.
