Thompson has said he intended to run again for mayor after losing to incumbent Michael Bloomberg in 2009. But until Friday he was the only one of the politicians presumed to be hopefuls who hadn’t started fund-raising.

He registered with the city Campaign Finance Board as a candidate for mayor on Friday. The only other candidate who’s declared he’s pursuing the City Hall seat is Rep. Anthony Weiner. Analysts say it’s unlikely the congressman would make a bid for the job after his Internet-sex scandal.

Thompson has also been nominated to chair the state Judicial Compensation Commission.

Other candidates have been fund-raising but haven’t declared they’re running for mayor.
