New York – Sen. Charles Schumer says the Department of Interior has rescinded a rule that has barred faraway Indian tribes from building casinos in the Catskills.

Schumer says Tuesday the department informed him it was overturning the so-called commutability rule, which dates from the Bush administration.

The department in January 2008 rejected plans for two Indian casinos in the Catskills, citing the long distances from tribal lands to the proposed gambling sites. In rejecting applications from the St. Regis Mohawks of northern New York and The Stockbridge Munsee of Wisconsin, federal officials said the “remote” locations of the casinos could harm the reservation communities by encouraging residents to leave for jobs elsewhere.

Schumer and other New York officials argued that the Catskill casinos have local support and would create jobs

Here comes trouble. The revenue that comes from casinos is essentially criminal (though not technically so). Casinos base their income on the gambler, mostly who do out of compulsion, and are weak of judgment – handing off their money to the casinos who always win. These establishments are notorious for creating environments that stimulate betting, taking risks, and using poor judgment. They wave the “big win”, and never, ever tell you that you are just having a moment of excitement that will cost you dearly. These places also have zero standards of tznius, and allow for way too much immorality of various kinds. It is bad enough that there are already places to go that are accessible to the New York region without too much travel. But to populate the Catskills with these places and create major michsholim for our own communities is frightening. Too many casinos in AC are filled with frum Yidden who destroy themselves and their extended families. Now Schumer is helping this be brought to the frum community in the Catskills. Shame on him and anyone that supports this.

Wow! Look at Schumer finally taking a genuinely CONSERVATIVE stance on something!

Good for you Chuck, maybe there is a glimmer of hope for you in this world!

Construction on this casino cannot begin soon enough. Countless people are desperately waiting for these jobs.

This is news worth of a celebration!

Someone once said, “I don’t waste time going to L.V. I call my bank and tell em which casino to send the money to.
Come on guys. Don’t we know it? Casinos in the catskill will cause a churben for yiddishkeit.
Not one erliche yid will ever say casinos are good for the jews.

The question I have is when hotels in catskils open the city wants to destroy them because they claim the region is rural and should stay like this but when they wanna advance from the casino they simply change their tone

I live in Sullivan County all year and I think that casinos will be good for this area economical growth.
