Israel – Minister Working to Have National ID Cards State One’s Religion

Israel – Interior Minister Eli Yishai (Shas) has signed a regulation that state the holder’s religion and thus prevent non-Orthodox converts from being defined on their IDs as Jews.

Yishai, in the same post 10 years ago, was ordered by the High Court of Justice to recognize Reform and Conservative converts as Jews. All IDs issued since then have had eight small stars on the nationality line instead of a religion.

Those who were defined as Jews on their ID cards, issued up to 2002, will retain that wording, but new converts will not have that, Channel 10 reported on Monday evening. It remained unclear what a non-Orthodox convert might be defined as in the space for nationality.

Officials in the Justice Ministry involved in the initiative were opposed to it, according to the report.

The Reform Movement in Israel issued an urgent letter to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, calling on him to exhibit the same leadership he showed around the conversion crisis last year when he thwarted Israel Beiteinu’s conversion bill, and to order Yishai to desist from his actions, which are aimed at “harming the recognized rights of Reform and Conservative converts” and could cause an unnecessary rift in the Jewish people.

Will the cards for the authentic Jews be marked with a big red “J?” You know, to make it easier to identify who is who?

These extremists will not stop until they are stopped. The difference between tolerance from secular world and religious world is that tolerance is a one way street from the religious world. You must tolerate them, but they can not tolerate you because their lifestyle and beliefs don’t allow such compromises. Next they will want 2 legal systems, 2 tax codes, complete control of education—1 for “marked” ‘authentic Jews’ and for the rest.

t “harming the recognized rights of Reform and Conservative converts” and could cause an unnecessary rift in the Jewish people.
    1. The people may be reform and conservative converts-but they are not converts to Judaism.
    2. Reform and conservative cause an unnecessary rift in the Jewish people by not accepting the Torah as being Divinely-given and by changing Jewish law.
    3. If reform and conservative lay leaders do not accept the Torah as being Divinely -given and change Jewish law then how can they accept people as Jews when the Torah is what defines who a Jew is.
    4. Reform and conservative conversions are a threat to Judaism and to the state of Israel by accepting those whose fathers are Jewish and mothers are not and by accepting anyone who wants to convert even without accepting the Torah.

Next he’ll want only sefardic jews marked as jewish.
It’s about time everyone realizes that the secular state of Israel should not be relied upon when considering ones jewish status. To me it makes no difference whether israel recognizes someone as a jew or not.

Some of these individuals who Yishai would designate as goyim have risked their lives to get to EY and be megayer. Such hatred of anything outside of his immediate agenda unfortunate.

Once again Elie Yishai, has no qualifications to be a country’s interior minister.

Why can’t they write simply add the denomination to the status. Jewish-reform, Jewish conservative, Jewish orthodox (and just for laughs, Jewish -Chareidi).?

The real test will be distinguishing who is ‘Dati’ and who is Chareidi…expect riots to break out…
