New York, NY – 4,100 Teachers’ Jobs Saved in Bloomberg’s Budget Deal

New York, NY – The layoffs of about 4,100 New York City teachers have been averted under a budget agreement that’s been reached by city lawmakers and union officials, although thousands more teachers expected to quit or retire this year won’t be replaced.

United Federation of Teachers spokesman Dick Riley says a deal was reached Friday night that would save the teachers’ jobs through union concessions on sabatticals and the hiring of substitutes.

A city official familiar with the negotiations is confirming the details of the deal. The official requested anonymity because no formal announcement has been made and says the deal will also prevent the shuttering of 20 city fire companies.

Officials have estimated that 2,000 teaching jobs will still be lost through attrition, leaving 73,000 to teach more than 1 million students.
