Schneiderman, whose office is responsible for monitoring charities in New York, says the current framework is “untenable” and that officials can police against fraud without imposing needless burdens and costs on the organizations.

The 29-member committee is expected to make recommendations by the end of the year for regulatory and legislative changes.

It will be staffed by Schneiderman’s Charities Bureau chief.

Members include directors of nonprofits from around the state.

Included on Schneiderman’s committee is William Rapfogel, executive director and chief executive of the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty.

“I am honored to be working with Attorney General Schneiderman and his Leadership Committee on Nonprofit Revitalization. Mr. Rapfogel told VIN News.

“New Yorkers should expect that non-profit organizations and charities will be effectively regulated but we should expect that government will not unfairly burden them with bureaucracy and unreasonable mandates. The Attorney General’s commitment to helping to find the right balance and this team of talented New Yorkers will certainly make a difference.”

After all the frauds and scams we have seen within yiddeshe mosdos, we need MORE regulation not less. The Dwek affair and other recent events show that sadly too many askanim and rabbonim will steal funds from charities or engage in tax evasion and other unlawful conduct that leave these charities exposed to government claims for unpaid taxes and diversions of funds for personal use.
