Nicholas Capozzi, the four-term mayor of the 6,000 resident village on the North Shore, made the comments in a 41-minute cell phone conversation with local contractor Danny Aiello, according to a news report.

“The Spaniolis are rolling all over the place. They rent out the place and put locks on every door. It’s gotta stop,” Capozzi said, according to taped conversations first played on CBS 2 news Monday night.

Referring to a heavily Latino area in Manorhaven, Capozzi was recorded as saying, “Do you drive down that — block? It looks like — Harlem. It looks worse than Harlem. It’s a — hole over there.” [amny]

Boy the last person knows plenty why does he get re-elected, how do you know so much and who’s payroll are you on, the mayor has done more for this village than anyone before him. How is it the DA as you claim has not gotten to him?

The people in this village know him he is everywhere and you sound like your a real loser. The mayor gets banged from the local news rag that only prints items against him, those who opose him want to be hime but don’t have the guts to say it. Read the Newsday blog 220 entries 200 positive the people know. CBS had real egg on their face and weinberger plays dirty.

This Mayor has a history of division and sneaky deals that goes back many years in Manorhaven. Just google him as I did. Stories in the Port Washington News, op-ed pieces and letters to the editor in local papers all wrtie about how he: 1) forced his way onto the Manorhaven board of trustees after losing the election (He was appointed anyway in blatant disregard to the town’s vote by former mayor and friend Jim Tomlinson.) 2)maintains a mutually beneficial relationship between himself and a local garbage company (This company has been on the winning side of many local contracts and business dealings like so many other “F.O.C.’s“.) 3) greased the skids for the plan to build condos on the hazardous waste site at Thygpin Steel in Manhasset Isle (“It’s ok because people won’t live on the first two floors!”) 4) facilitated land deals that sold for less than market prices 5) demonstrated a history of anger and violence at political meetings 6) was in a position of conflict of interest with the Town Counsel (I have heard that he is the mayor’s personal companion.), and now 7) justified making these terrible comments after initially denying them (Didn’t he say they were doctored by Aiello in a note to the local residents at first?) and was less than forthcoming in his “apology“. The list seems to go on and on. I believe a person is innocent until proven guilty, but there is a lot of very questionable behavior about this guy. If the DA is investigating, I am certain they would not do so on the basis of just one person’s repeated complaints. I give Aiello credit for going out on a limb to call this guy out. I am sure his business may suffer as a result, but somebody has got to do the right thing.

Sounds like he was trying to address problems in his town, which is commendable. There are problems in many places with such people renting houses and dangerously and illegally loading them up with people.

The attacks on the Mayor probably come from those who oppose him anyway and are trying to divert attention from the real problems that need to be addressed.
