The six and a half pound baby boy was born last Wednesday evening, just hours after the gruesome discovery of the missing boy, and Shmuly and Shira Rudsky of Miami made the decision to give their son the name that had come to mean so much to so many.
“My wife and I were in the delivery room when we heard the tragic news,” said Shmuly Rudski in an interview with VIN News from his son’s bris at the Jewish Learning Center in Miami Beach. “We felt a connection. A Jewish child had been lost just hours before our son came into this world. From everything we had heard, Leiby had a special neshama and like so many others, his story touched us very deeply. We made the decision right then and there to honor Leiby’s memory by giving our son the name Leib.”
The Mohel Yochanan Klein, admits to being overwhelmed when he heard the name of the baby this morning.
“All I could think was mi k’amcha yisroel,” said Klein who is also the chaplain at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. “How a family in Miami could be so affected by something happening a thousand miles away that the first thing that goes through their mind after their son is born is that they want to name him after this boy? It is truly unbelievable.”
