The trench being dug outside the Leif Ericson Day School caved in burying the worker and killing him, said Fire Department spokesman Jim Long.    Several department units had arrived and begin digging out the trench at 1037 72nd Street in Dyker Heights, between 10th and 11th Avenues.

The worker was buried for at least an hour, Long said. He had been working together with his brother to waterproof the foundation of the school, Long said. The students were safely evacuated, a school spokeswoman said. [VIN-1010 WINS]
