Washington - President Bush nominated a former White House liaison to the Jewish community as deputy health secretary.

Tevi Troy, 40, whose nomination was announced Thursday, currently serves as deputy assistant to the president for domestic policy. He served as Bush’s liaison to the Jewish community in 2003-04. Troy, who is Sabbath observant, is known as one of Bush’s busiest staffers.

“We wish to express our appreciation to President Bush for selecting an upstanding member of our community for this position of importance and responsibility, ” the Orthodox Union said in a statement. [JTA]
