Jonathan Gleich of Brooklyn says he learned that the hard way when his electric-powered, emission-free Segway scooter got slapped with a $90 ticket.
“New York City wants to be green, but to me they’re being mean,” he said. He has been commuting on his Segway for more than two years, traveling 15 miles each way from Brighton Beach to Midtown.
“For me to get to work costs 15 cents instead of two bucks to take the subway,” he said. “There are never delays, there are never strikes. There’s nothing to stop me but rain and snow.”
Gleich, 48, bought insurance and tried to register his Segway with the Department of Motor Vehicles, but the DMV refused, calling it an “unregisterable vehicle.”
Then, last September, he was pulled over at 23rd Street and Sixth Avenue and was given a ticket for driving an unregistered vehicle.
Gleich tried to fight the ticket in court last January but lost, with the judge referring to the Segway as “a gas-powered skateboard.”
“That’s what the city considers this to be,” Gleich said. “But I see neither gas nor a skateboard.” [nypost]
the only green this city want’s is money.
How come the judge didn’t dismiss his ticket if he tried to register his vehicle, but, it was unregisterable?
