A man seated in the rear of the Sloatsburg Village Court pulled a sawed-off .22-caliber rifle from a manila envelope and fired off a single shot in the courtroom shortly after 6 p.m.
No one was hit and the bullet landed in the front wall of the courtroom above the judge.
The man, who was in the courtroom in connection with a civil matter, dropped the gun and bolted from the room.
A Ramapo police officer, already in the courtroom for an unrelated traffic matter, fired a shot at the fleeing man.
The suspect wasn’t hit but was tackled in the parking lot by a civilian and another police officer.
The suspect, who police said was scraped up from being tackled,
was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital.
Detective Sergeant John Lynch of the Ramapo Police Department said at a press conference that it appeared that the suspect was shooting at a woman on the other side of the courtroom. Lynch said that the woman was also involved in the civil action but did not know any specifics.
