Wiesel, 78, was attacked the last time he was in San Francisco attending a peace forum at the Argent Hotel on Feb. 1, as was reported here on Vos Iz Neias. Police have arrested Eric Hunt of New Jersey, a Holocaust denier, Feb. 17 on suspicion of stalking Wiesel.
Press credentials will be required to attend Wednesday’s news conference in downtown San Francisco when Wiesel will be awarded the Koret Prize. The exact location is not being advertised.
“Given that something happened the last time he (Wiesel) was here, we are taking every precaution,” said Koret spokeswoman Susan Wolfe.
The Koret Prize is awarded periodically to individuals who make extraordinary contributions to Jewish life and culture. The 2007 prize carries a grant of $250,000 to the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity, established shortly after Wiesel was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1986. [SF Chronicle]
