New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg categorically ruled out running for governor of the state of New York on Tuesday, denying a newspaper story that he planned to take on Gov. Eliot Spitzer in 2010. The mayor said, “it was a totally made up story” and that he spoke to New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer about it and assured him he’s not planning to run for governor.
The New York Post story, citing an unnamed “top New York Republican,” said Bloomberg became interested in being governor because he realizes the US presidency is beyond his grasp.
“I have absolutely no interest, categorically, I have never had a conversation about it,” Bloomberg told reporters. “I think the closest I’d ever come, maybe two years ago when they were looking for a candidate (for governor), somebody said would you run and I said no thank you. I have no interest whatsoever.” [nypost-VIN]
