Pepper Pike, OH – Four minors and two adults came from the suburbs to skateboard at Park Synagogue on Shaker Boulevard. By the time police chased them away, the six had done damage that could total $50,000.

Police Sgt. Joe Mariola said officers came upon the skateboarders after the damage had been done. They had apparently used six marble benches in front of the synagogue for tricks, leaving long streaks of paint, gouge marks throughout and wheel marks on the boards. “Marble is a soft stone,” Mariola said. “It’s not granite that can take a shot from a skateboard.”
Later police stopped five of the skateboarders for trespassing at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, 2929 Richmond Road. They told police they were just “looking for a place to skate.”

Ken Anthony, the director of Park Synagogue, told police it would cost $50,000 to replace the damaged benches. He said he is attempting to see what the repair cost might be.
City prosecutor Jonathan Greenberg said he is reviewing police reports. [Cleveland.com]

First off, I would like to apologize sincerely for the anti-semitic comments of some of the younger skateboards who have posted on this. If you think making anti-emetic jabs will improve the validity of your viewpoint, you are sadly mistaken. That being said, I shall commence my opinion.
In order to properly punish someone for damage done to a synagogue, one must asses what kind of damage was done. The damage here is purely an aesthetic form of damage, it does no real harm other than to the eyes. Second, we must admit that this damage was most certainly not directed to deface a synagogue, it was purely some rambunctious teens having some fun. Therefore, I think there should be no punishment. They intended no harm, and little or no ‘real’ harm was done. And shouldn’t the police force be out searching for real criminals, or at least the people making the anti-semitic comments?

This whole town is greedy for nothing but money. a bunch of money hungry jews who put the blame on skateboarding to make a bad name for kids who just simply do not have fun places to skate in the area.

why don’t you give them a place to skate? that’s one thing that really pisses me off is when you arrest skateboarders for damage, but you don’t give them a legal and safe place they can skate. Get a grant and build a skatepark. I know skateboarders would help build it and maybe toss in some stuff of theirs into it.

skateboarding may cause damage to pieces of peoples property, but you cant charge kids or even 2 young adults to pay $50,000 in damages to marble benches. honestly, it definetly does not cost THAT much for marble benches despite that it is expensive. skateboarders, for the most part, are just normal people who want to do the thing they love to do. a few streaks of paint doesn’t do anything. people barely notice if a ledge is a little scuffed. that place has probably been skated for soooo long and every skater has done a trick on it. 50 grand is a ridiculous price for kids riding on pieces of wood. it wasn’t like they were hurting people or causing havoic or anything. you need to come to that understanding.

I agree that the skateboarders were in the wrong here, but you can’t honestly think that these kids casued all the damage. There had probably been skateboarders there for years. I think this punishment is alittle overboard. Also and religiuous people you should find it in your hearts to forgive.

In regards to the comments left by Misha and Zev, your obvious lack of understanding and compassion are disgraceful. While these individuals certainly shouldn’t be let completely off the hook, the punishment, which you proposed is not on disproportionate to the crimes, but is also exceedingly cruel. I hope that you’ll take a moment to examine your own choices and actions, for your sake, and for the sanctity of your consciousness.
