Washington – Judge Rules Hungary Can Be Sued for Return of Art Seized by Nazis

    Washington – A U.S. judge has ruled that the heirs of a Jewish art collector can proceed with a lawsuit against Hungary seeking the return of art seized during the Holocaust that is worth more than $100 million.

    But the judge did grant the Hungarian request to throw out an older lawsuit by other heirs.

    The collection of Baron Mor Lipot Herzog included paintings by El Greco and Francisco de Zurbaran.

    Hungary had argued that that the newer 2010 suit by some of Herzog’s heirs in Washington should be dismissed because compensation for the 44 artworks was covered by a 1973 claims agreement between Hungary and the United States.
