New York, NY – Congressman Anthony Weiner offered up an alternate to the mayor’s congestion pricing plan Sunday.
Weiner says reducing the number of trucks — not cars — would be the most effective way of dealing with congestion in the city.

According to the Federal Highway Administration, since 1998 truck traffic in the city has risen 30 percent.
In the same period, car traffic has risen just 8 percent.

“The problem of congestion in New York City is much more of a truck problem than a car problem, and if we can figure out a way to reduce the congestion of trucks, we don’t need to have a tax on middle class car drivers coming into New York City,” said Weiner.

Among the suggestions Weiner offers are: raising truck tolls during peak hours and lowering them at night to encourage trucks to stay out of the city during rush hour.[ny1]
