Meanwhile, with a new Siena poll released today showing Turer with a 6 point lead, Weprin’s Rabbi Shlomo Hochberg of Young Israel of Jamaica spoke out today in support of Weprin, by releasing the following statement below.

I have known Assemblyman David Weprin for more than two decades as a member of Jamaica Estates-Holliswood community. A Shomer Torah and Mitzvos, he and all of his children have attended Yeshivos and live a full Torah life. He is truly a mentch and cares deeply about all people and their problems and issues. Viewed in the total picture, he will be a valuable voice and advocate for Torah values. Above all, he has been thoroughly committed to the Orthodox Jewish community, and has been instrumental in facilitating the growth and development of numerous excellent educational and youth programming in a true Torah environment throughout Queens and beyond.

He is fully dedicated to Eretz Israel as our Jewish homeland, and understands its inherent Kedusha. Several years ago, I had the privilege of visiting Eretz Yisrael together with David, as guests of Yitzchak Pindrus, then Mayor of Beitar Illit, where then City Councilman Weprin worked vigorously to develop business relationships between Beitar Illit and NYC, helping bring appropriate jobs and financial aid to its residents.

Assemblyman Weprin has always been an ardent and outspoken supporter of Israel, and I am confident that he will continue to be a forceful voice in Congress to the Administration and devote his talents and energy to supporting the security of Israel as the Jewish State, and the Jewish community as a whole.

I would like to give Rabbi Hochberg the benefit of the doubt and conlude that is simply an uncalculated, nieve endorsment of Mr. Weprin, however the sceptic in me can only conclude that the good Rabbi is simply selling his soul for political expediency, much like Mr. Weprin did earlier this summer.

What does supporting a gay couple’s constitutional right (if he believes that it’s supported) have to do with being a shomer torah u’mitzvos??

Will any one of you here dispute the fact that the constitutions allows one to be Oveid Avodah Zorah?
Does that make you no longer a shomer torah umitzvos?

Sometimes I feel like the only person with a brain around here…

The good rabbi never mentioned his favorite candidate’s biggest problem. Pay no attention to that elephant in the living room. But then again, how common it is for a YI rabbi, or any other modern orthodox for that matter, to stand for Torah values or just common decency?

Why can’t everyone understand that Weprin is Orthodox, supporter of Israel etc…By voting for gay marriage for those who wish to live that life, doesn’t mean that he believes in it for himself or orthodox Jewry. There are non Jews in his district as well.

    Dear Rabbi Hochberg,
If you are Weprin’s rabbi and despite that he voted for Gay marriage, then it either means you agree with him or you are more of a social rabbi and not a spiritual leader whom he follows. Which makes your letter totaly irrelavent. Sorry.

Dear Rabbi Hochberg, no offense but if you are his Rabbi how did you let him vote for gay marriage; and if you could not prevent him from doing so how do you support him to be a congressman? Just asking. Please respond today

I am and have bee a Republican all my life.
This special election I will be voting for Weprin. In the last few months he was the catalyst that saved various child assistance program in NYS. He has worked and put tremendous effort in helping the jewish communitu.
Granted that he has the issue with the marriage vote. That, however, has no relevance to my final vote.
Granted that Obama needs to be faught but in this case I think we will gain more with Weprin
what has Turner done for us? What has he done at all politically?

The only Jews supporting Dave Weprin are the “not-for-profit” executives whom are hoping Weprin will continue to bring millions of dollars in tax money their way. For everyone else in the Jewish community Weprin has brought nothing but financial ruin.
As a New York City Councilman from 2001 – 2009, he voted for the huge 20% property tax hike in 2002. That property tax hike created a huge financial burden for many struggling families, that continues to this day. Then he voted for all the parking meter increases, and almost every other fee/tax increase that the Public Employee Unions were pushing. Thanks to him, the average family now pays an extra $3000 – $4000 a year in city taxes.
He hasn’t proposed any legislation to deal with the tuition crisis that Jewish families are dealing with. It’s absolutely a crime that educational funding is being denied to children, just because their parents don’t want to send them to a public school. But Weprin puts his loyalties to the Teachers Union ahead of that of his fellow Jews whom are being forced into poverty to provide a quality education to their children.
Again, the only Jews supporting Weprin are the Not For Profit machers.

    If Mr. Weprin is a Baal Tshuvah and endorses SSM because of a gap or a lack in his Jewish education, that an Orthodox Jew must observe Halachah and ALSO have the proper Hashkafah, both at home and in public;

an Orthodox Rabbi, like Rabbi Hochberg, certainly does NOT have that excuse. He should know better and should NOT have issued the statement about Mr. Weprin.

Is Mr. Weprin really “a Shomer Torah and Mitzvos” and “advocate for Torah values” ?

I didn’t know that marching in the gay pride parade, holding a rainbow flag; and having one’s picture taken, at that parade, with a man in a dress; and endorsing and voting for SSM, are all Torah values. One can learn something new everyday, right? : – (
