Israel – The Chabad Chassidic movement is helping Israelis prepare for the New Year by offering to check mezuzahs, the scrolls with select Torah passages that are traditionally attached to the doorposts of a Jewish home.

Young Chabad men told Channel 2 that they found an extreme case of a mezuzah not suitable for use this year. The scroll was found to contain the usual verse – but with Christian crosses drawn on various parts of the scroll, including on the name of G-d.

Overall, the Chabad volunteers have found that just 40 percent of the mezuzahs they check are “kosher,” suitable for use. In 11 percent of cases, mezuzah covers are found not to contain a scroll.

Did they show anyone the “klaf” that they claim was adulterated?

which is why people shouldn’t buy mezuzahs at a 99 cent store!

    This is terrible! (:-o

Who’s making these things, that they could somehow “pass inspection” without anyone noticing the graffiti on the scrolls?!

I mean, I don’t know what’s worse: a Jew who’s making mezzuzot w\crosses all over the scrolls as some kind of sick prank…

Or a company ran by gentiles, who are making them w\crosses all over the scrolls JUST to be spiteful, and to try to trick the Jewish people into bringing Avoda Zara into their homes?!

Can someone perhaps elaborate for me a little on who is usually responsible for creating the mezzuzot & for “checking” the scrolls inside, etc?

    Thanks to all!

I called a sefarim store (in NY area) to ask about their mezuzas. When I asked where they came from, if they had any rabbincal approval, etc., the man on the phone said somethign to the effect of “Why do you want to know?”

its probably just some messianic nut who bought the mezuzah and drew crosses all over it.
