New York continued to have the highest combined state and local tax burden in the nation during the 2004-2005 federal fiscal year.
That’s according to figures from the Public Policy Institute, the research arm of the Business Council of New York State.

The figures show New York’s total tax burden per person was $$5,770, up nearly ten percent from $$5,260 for the 2003-2004 year.
For state taxes only, New York ranked 11th at $$2,607 per person, down from 10th place at 2,377 in 2003-2004.
Connecticut ranked second for state-local taxes in both years, while Wyoming ranked third and fourth in the respective years. New Jersey ranked fourth in 2004-05 and third in 2003-04. [AP]
