The two-wheeled gizmos hit a pothole in 2003 when they were recalled because they tended to fall over when the battery ran low. The problem has been fixed, and now the New York City Police Department has spent $53,000 to buy 10 Segways for use beginning Thursday. [amny]

NEW YORK, May 7 (UPI) — A Segway rider in New York is in a bind — he got a ticket for driving an unregistered vehicle, and then was told he could not register the Segway.

Jonathan Gleich of Brooklyn said he had been making a 15-mile commute to work on his Segway for the past two years, until he was pulled over and issued a $90 ticket for having an unregistered vehicle, The New York Post reported.

When he tried to register his Segway the New York DMV refused, calling the emission-free vehicle unregisterable.

New York City wants to be green, but to me they’re being mean, said Gleich.

He even tried to fight the ticket in court but lost, with the judge referring to the Segway as a gas-powered skateboard.

That’s what the city considers this to be, Gleich said. But I see neither gas nor a skateboard.
