Opening up 290 schoolyards to neighborhoods for open space is part of Mayor Bloomberg's environmental initiative. He has allocated $96 million to the Parks Department for the project, Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe said.
Benepe told lawmakers reviewing Bloomberg's budget proposals that 121 school playgrounds would be rebuilt by the Education Department. "Every playground we do will have greenery added to it. Every time we do a playground, now we try to green it; rip up some asphalt, put in green and shrubs," the commissioner added. [NY Post]
