Brooklyn, NY – A Borough Park couple who pleaded guilty to stealing more than $20,000 in Medicaid benefits has been sentenced to probation and community service.
Abraham L., 36, and his wife Miriam, 37, both worked at a funeral home in Borough Park, where Abraham was the manager. In Brooklyn Criminal Court this spring, they admitted that they submitted false information on their Medicaid applications and received benefits they knew they were not entitled to.

Although Abraham earned between $80,000 and $100,000 from the funeral home in 2003, and his wife earned more than $52,000, the couple applied for Medicaid in April 2003 and again in 2005, according to the state welfare inspector general, Brian P. Sanvidge.
On their 2003 Medicaid application, they reported their annual household income as $24,835, with $8,500 in resources, Sanvidge said in a statement. For the next year, they reported an annual household income of $42,900, with resources of $8,500 or less.

Judge Garnett sentenced them to three years' probation and ordered each of them to complete 150 hours of community service and to repay one-half of the $20,122, the full amount of the stolen benefits.  [Brooklyn Daily Eagle]
