Palestinians yell at a U.S. diplomatic vehicle during protest against U.S. in the West Bank city of Ramallah, Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011. Angry Palestinians accosted a top American official Tuesday during a celebratory West Bank visit in honor of Palestinians who graduated from American-funded education programs. About 30 protesters blocked the convoy of Daniel Rubinstein, the U.S. consul-general in Jerusalem, chanting "shame on you" and hurling shoes at his vehicle. Associated Press reporters saw about 30 protesters blocking the convoy of vehicles, chanting “shame on you” and hurling shoes — a deeply insulting gesture in Arab culture.

Tuesday’s incident comes amid tensions in American-Palestinian ties. The U.S. has vowed to block the Palestinians’ request for recognition of an independent state at the United Nations. It also hinted it may cut aid if Palestinians proceed with their plans.

It is interesting that the American Consul-General in Jerusalem, Daniel Rubinstein, is Jewish.

That is an interesting departure from historical norms as all previous Consuls-General have been Gentiles. Also – as we all know – the Jerusalem Consulate-General is politically focused on Yehuda, Shomron and Gaza.
