Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez told the media that the incident was unfortunate, but police protection could not be increased in the neighborhood. “The first thing I’d like to say is that the whole incident is very disturbing, the fact that it did occur. We’re doing everything possible to try to solve it and arrest the subjects that committed this crime. Secondly, we’re very lucky that no one got hurt. Obviously, everybody wants to see a cop in their neighborhood. The reality is that just can’t be the case.”

The conference came after residents gathered together with posters Wednesday night in order to get the attention of Mayor Carlos Alvarez in hopes of getting a police substation and some much needed security in the quiet neighborhood. “We’re going to have a rally to get the attention of Mayor Alvarez that he must get funds for the cops to get a substation right here in the neighborhood,” said Joe Fettman.

Authorities say they already put forth a heavy police presence as we reported here in the neighborhood on Wednesday to ensure everyone’s safety. “We have asked that our officers step up patrol on all three shifts in this neighborhood,” said Major Mark Jeter of the Miami-Dade Police. [vin]
