The river provides drinking water to about 2 million people in Rockland and in Bergen and Passaic counties in New Jersey. The Ramapo starts in lower Orange County and flows south.
Geoff Welch, the Ramapo River Watershed Keeper for the town of Ramapo, and Jeff Geller, an environmental educator for the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rockland, were on a tour of the waterway when they spotted some of the foam. They traced it to the sewer treatment plant.
“I’ve never seen so much foam,” Welch said.
The plant operators have taken samples and the state Department of Environmental Conservation went to the scene. [Journal News]
