Hector Alvarez and Miguel Castillo, both 28, were charged with attempted kidnaping, armed robbery, armed burglary and other offenses, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said both officers were suspended immediately after their arrests and resigned their positions later Saturday.

The two had entered the police academy in 2005, and were still on probationary status. Alvarez was assigned to a Brooklyn precinct, while Castillo was assigned to the central booking unit in Manhattan.

Authorities said a Rutherford resident saw the two off-duty officers fighting with his neighbor Friday morning. When questioned by the resident, the officers said they were on “official business” and were conducting a terrorism investigation, the prosecutor’s office said.

The resident doubted the officers’ story and asked Alvarez and Castillo to remain there while he called Rutherford police, but the officers instead fled in their vehicle, prosecutors said. However, they were stopped a short time later by Rutherford police detectives.[nydailynews]
