Williamsburg, NY – Controversial signs in Yiddish, warning women to step aside when a man is walking down the sidewalk in South Williamsburg, were yanked by city officials today.

A Parks Department spokesperson tells PIX11 News, “It is illegal to nail any sign to a street tree, regardless of the sign’s content. The signage was subsequently removed by Parks employees.”
Assemblyman Dov Hikind, who does not represent the district, said it was offensive and he’s personally glad the signs were taken down. “It was a great story that you brought to everyone’s attention. And the signs are now down. Good job,” said Hikind.
This was just the work of a few bored indeviduals.

The problem is, they think more about the presence of “woman” even when there are NO woman in sight! STOP THINKING OF THE FEMALES AND THE FEMALES WONT BE RELEVANT TO YOUR SIGHT!!
90% of Williamsburg residents were very upset with this sign. Three crazy people who obviously have a fetish that women should move for them put out a sign, and it paints the whole community as extremists.
I do not agree with hanging up such signs but we keep on seeing a trend of yidden bringing every small shtus to the media and cause trmendous chilel hashem. A goy that can’t read yiddish is not offended, its the yid that is trying to flatter the goy that brings attention to this stuff. We have to stop taking every yiddish inside thing to the outside world, if it causes a chilel hashem. Gut yom tov.

When I am walking in public if I see a group of women walking my way, I step aside and allow them to pass. That’s the way we were always taught as children. Since when is being Jewish an excuse to NOT be a gentleman??? What the heck is wrong some people in this generation?

This is so ridiculous, not justified on any Halachic level other than pure narishkeit. To paraphrase Shakespeare (he wrote poems and plays and stuff for those educated only in Limudey Kodesh) “The “chossids” doth protest too much, me thinks.”
Both are extreme, but go back only a few years ago such a sign was not necessary. It has self understood.
We women need more true Jewish Gentlemen. Who are brave, considerate and have loving kindness toward the women in their community. This is a disgrace and should be brought to the attention of the entire Jewish community. Its just a symptom of a worse problem. That if not confronted will grow worse quickly.
I work in Williamsburg and I didn’t see any signs. If you think I’d move aside for these ignorant cretins you are very much mistaken. They should move for ME if it bothers them so much.
Interesting that they weren’t random hand-written signs tacked haphazardly to some tree. Looks like lots of thought went into how the signs would look. Do they, like, hire a graphic designer in these situations?
As a side note, while I do think the signs are silly, offensive, and blah, blah, blah, all you chasidishe men haters have to lighten up a little. The actual wording is pretty respectful.
was just in williamsburg and now there are other signs stating something about not wearing a 2 piece duster or clingy slinky materials.

Here in the UK I will happily plow my way down the street and say excuse me to any men blocking the way, each extra step counts at times so I will not step out of the way. Those who are really worried here just walk along the street and leave us women the sidewalk, which is very considerate of them.
