Two cops talked a heartbroken young man out of jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge last night.
The 19-year-old, who was upset, hopped off the center walkway, ran through Manhattan-bound traffic and climbed onto a beam overlooking the East River at about 8 p.m.
An off-duty cop who was driving by contacted colleagues, and Emergency Service officers rushed to the bridge.
“I climbed on the beam and tried to shimmy toward him,” Detective Hugh Gordon said.
“A couple of times, I got closer to him and he shouted, ‘Back off!’ ”
Gordon and Detective Mike Cook began talking to the youth about his problems. “I told him that the problems of today will be gone tomorrow,” Gordon said.
As the two officers held his attention, other cops managed to grab him.
“Thank God he listened to me,” Gordon said. “I was able to keep him distracted.”
The young man, whose name was withheld, was taken to Bellevue Hospital for evaluation.
The bridge was closed for an hour to cars and pedestrians. [NY Post]
