The blaze had broken out last Tuesday in the Warren Grove Gunnery Range area along the Burlington-Ocean county border. It eventually covered about 22 square miles of land and forced the temporary evacuation of about 6,000 people — many of them seniors — from 2,500 homes at its height.

While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, the New Jersey Air National Guard has said one of its F-16s dropped a flare into the tinder-dry Pinelands during a training mission Tuesday afternoon, possibly starting the blaze.

Today, Corzine left no doubt what he thinks should be done to prevent this from happening again.
“We’re kind of in the ‘three strikes and you’re out zone’ as far as I’m concerned.” “It’s time to very seriously look for alternatives.” “I don’t think you should be gambling on rain to fall at the right time.”
Corzine said he would like to see this take effect by Jan. 1, 2008. [wnbc]
