Brooklyn, NY – Occupy Wall Street isn’t the only protest attracting media attention in our area. A religious group in Williamsburg organized a protest of a hair salon on Lee Avenue.

PIX11 News obtained a controversial flyer in Yiddish, circulating around the predominately Orthodox community in Williamsburg. The flyer asks people to protest the Iris Salon, at 311 Lee Avenue, because it is “immodest” and is allegedly offensive to the surrounding religious community.
PIX11 News visited the salon. At the site of the salon, there is only a outside saying “Cleaners” and curtains covering all the windows. The owner of the salon refused to comment on this story.
The lastest protest of the group in front of the salon, was back in May when almost a hundred people gathered.
Pictures of the last protest are posted on a Facebook page created by supporters of the salon.
The page says, “the Willamburg Taliban” is attacking the salon ownership and, “a small group of extremists is seeking to terrorize and honest businesswoman.”
They don’t own the neighborhood, don’t go in and don’t look and don’t support. Evidently there are other people in the neighborhood. Live and let live.
#1 I’m going to leave that to you . You should also do somthing
These people are living in the stone age woman in back of the bus the would be more at home in Iran
yossi- you must be somwhere in a never never land ,you dont get the basics you live in america where you can open a store wherever you want not where a few fanatics decide, wake up di shoite live in real world not in one of youre own making dont try to dominate others because you will fail dont forget you dont live in youre own country there are rules here dont break them you will fail for sure
For those of us who do not live in the area, can someone fill us in on the background to this story? What is the nature of the business being picketed? What do the protersters find objectionable? Thanks.
these men are protesting a salon?!! have they nothing better to do with their time? their lives are so unexciting that they have to make trouble for other people? (who are actually trying to make an HONEST LIVING???!). what is wrong with a little modest salon behind curtains? aren’t the willy women allowed to get pedicures before they use the mikveh? this is totally ludicrous.
What happened to freedom of speech in USA? the hate to frum ppl is so severe is pathetic!
Anybody has the right to protest, all u Jew haters!
(Reply to #7 ): You got that right! Thanks for putting the medieval thinkers in their places. I’ll ride anywhere on the bus I want to. And I’ll support the right of nail and hair salons to operate freely, too. Welcome to America 2011, everyone else. Get used to it. Stop acting like you’re in Hungary, circa 1853.
I live in Flatbush but I wanna tell the willi protestors. “Chazak Vamatz” we all know you’re doing what’s needs to be done to keep your machne ‘kudoish’ I have spoken to Rav M Sternbuch in EY he told me that in our days there is no other place in the world as holy than Williamsburg..Be Proud of it!!! May you always be a Sample for Klal Yisroel!!!!
I really dont understand what the problem is with that salon. The windows are covered with curtains. Please explain the big “aveira”. Those that protest that, have nothing better to do and need action all the time
One thing I don’t understand. You settled in willaimsburg and decided its yours?! What right do you have?! Isn’t that what you yell at the people in Israel? You’re nothing better! You don’t own the place and everyone can open any store they want so if you’re bored, go open a sefer and do something worthwhile!
you have to realize, these idiots have a big problem, they are criminaly insane sex obsessed maniacs, who need psychological help,as a matter of fact,a big percentage of chareidi jews who have been arrested in the last year or so for molesting children, these same charachters have been busy all these years with TZNIUS issues, and some of them even belonged in the so called VAD HATZNIUS,
there is only one way to deal with these gangsters, and that’s the way GERR to care of the Sikrikin gangsters in MEAH SHEARIM,this week
you can hide behind halacha all you want
woman to the back degrades woman if not let the men sit in the back let the men move aside when woman walk
As usual, the media is blowing this up.
I live in Williamsburg and was there by the protest. There were Takkeh hundred people there but they just came to watch a spectacle. There were about 15 protesters there, the rest were just watching and laughing at these fanatics. So their account of hundreds of protesters is false! I for one came to protest the protesters.
There are quite a few salons in Willi, the Williamsburg women do not rely on this for manis and pedis. But those are not in main areas like Lee Ave. I think their biggest issue was that it was in the center of Williamsburg.
I don’t agree with them of course, and neither do most residents here as is evident in the many customers and booming business of Iris’ Salon.
It’s just a farse and a big show.
But they don’t really care about Tznius when their own Rabbi’s, Melamdim and School Administrators are caught red handed in allegations of Child-molestation in their own Yeshivos, as proven to be the case by Rabbi Nuchem Rosenberg in countless, dozens of case inside the “holly” Williamsburg.
Why are they not protesting that???????????
Because the shameful fact, that their own boys and girls go off the Derech and end up on 42st and that their highest Rabbi’s are caught molesting – all that happens away from the public eye – SO THAT’S OK!
But if someone opens a legitimate KOSHER store in Lee ave. without the standards of the Black Vale worn by Taliban then you must protest.
My wife and I are coming to New York next week ‘בעזרת ה. Can someone please give my wife Iris’ phone number? She wants to make an appointment.
Non of you who attacked me (post #6 ) defended the fact of chill Hashem by those ppl going to the media to shame us, I understand you have diffarant views, if you believe we are wrong, that those not allow you to do another wrong thing by going to the media, nothing will stop us from expressing our culture in WB as long it is within the p
Law.
