Mesifta Beth Shraga, a Jewish high school in Monsey, has proposed building on nearly 7.4 acres off Camp Hill Road, just east of the village of Pomona.

The proposal has not been presented to the Planning Board. It has been examined by the Community Design and Review Committee, a board subgroup, which provides builders with the opinions of town planning consultants and engineers.

Ira Emanuel, a New City attorney for the developer couldn't predict when the proposal might go to the Planning Board. "If it looks like the building remains," he said, "then we'll have to make significant changes to the plan."

A proposal in 2000 for an assisted-living facility on the property was abandoned after it was mired in concerns about the house, which is believed to have played a part in the Revolutionary War battles, including the defeat of the British at Yorktown.

The latest proposal is for a 32,561-square-foot school and an 18,040-square-foot dormitory. Six houses for staff members also are proposed.

A neighbor of the property, Lee Anne Greene said "I thought I could be here forever," Greene said from a tractor, "but change is being wrought on the whole town." [lohud]
