New York, NY – Council: Ban Embarrassing Parking Violation Stickers

New York, NY – The City Council’s Transportation Committee will be holding a hearing tomorrow on a bill proposed last spring by Councilman David G. Greenfield (D-Brooklyn) that would change the way the city punishes drivers for alternate-side parking infractions.

The bill would prohibit the city from affixing punitive adhesive stickers to a car without either the driver’s consent or a judgment of the driver’s guilt in a tribunal or court.

“Everyone is innocent until proven guilty in America except if they park their cars on the wrong side of the street on alternate-side days,” explained Councilman Greenfield. “Slapping an impossible to remove sticker on a car window is not just punitive, but is hazardous as well. It’s difficult to drive safely when your window is obstructed.” explained Councilman Greenfield.

Greenfield’s bill has received support from many quarters including the American Automobile Association. “Receiving a parking ticket in New York already comes with a hefty fine,” said Jeffrey Frediani, a representative from AAA New York. “There is no need to punish someone twice for the same offense,” he concluded.

Due process requires this. I saw a DOC lady sticker the windows of a handicapped person. How can a handicapped person remove those stickers when they cannot even.

Rather put those stickers on cars that intentionally park illegal like double park or pump. By alternate side some people simply forget to move their car so they get fined but a sticker is a pain in the neck.

I love alternate side, people would leave their decrepit cars there forever if not for alternate side
in that way the streets are clean because of it.

I didn’t know they put stickers on your car. That’s crazy that they would do that!

Personally, I can see absolutely nothing wrong with punishing, or even stigmatizing, drivers for violating alternate side parking regulations. It is an absolutely open and shut case; either a car is parked on the correct side of the road or it is not. There can be no argument or debate about that.

Do not be let youselves be fooled by David Greenfield, or any other politician, for that matter. Greenfield is simply doing what he does best: saber rattling and doing all he possibly can to ensure that his name stays in the voters’ minds all the time.

If Councilman Greenfield was to advertise here (for example) he would naturally have to pay the costs levied by VIN. But by posturing as he has done in this instance he has paid not a red cent! VIN has carried his story as a news item. Result: Greenfield does not pay for this free publicity.

But getting back to the main issue, the answer to getting an embarrassing and annoying sticker on one’s windshield remains crystal clear: obey the traffic regulations, pure and simple.

This type of stick on violation sticker shouldn’t be that hard to remove if done properly. A single edge razor blade by itself or even better in a holder will work wonders. Wetting the sticker will help and should make the task easier. I have never received one put I am familiar with sticker removal.

Do you live in NY? Do you have any idea how difficult the rules are, and how reasonable it is for someone to occasionally make a mistake?! Why, indeed, must one be punished doubly for this “offense”?

I grew up in Brooklyn but live out of town now. While visiting my home in Brooklyn, I was reminded of the absurdity of alternate side parking, simply a money making scheme (notice the filthy streets). In Crown Heights, cars must be moved FOUR days a week! I missed the time by five minutes and I was slapped with a ticket. Instead of leaving my car there (once it was ticketed already), I felt that I should not obstruct the cleaning crews G-d forbid, and moved it to the other side, double-parked (as is allowed during the hours of cleaning). I missed the time to move my car BACK by a few minutes and was slapped with another $175 ticket!
Try doing this FOUR times a week!

    Thank you David Greenfield.

They should not do away with the stickers, they should just make them easier to remove.

They should just put the “boots” on the cars and not waste time with stickers. Those who park illegally should be made to suffer since their actions inconvenience the rest of us who follow the rules. No excuses: you park illegally, your car is either towed or booted.

i disagree with Greenfield on this one!!!

i live near a community center and (selfish) people block my driveway ALL the time.
i bought similar stickers, and applied them to the selfish peoples cars.

its been a year since i have been doing it, and guess what!!! less and less people block my driveway!

Someone should take these kind of stickers and stick it on a sanitation car on the front window they will learn a lesson

#6 - you are so right!! (why does everyone hate you for thinking your mind like they do?)
Keep the stickers- just get a different formula for making them. Make them easy to remove, but still a “negative reinforcement”. That way they can be removed easily but are there to try to encourage people to move their cars. Social pressure (having that sticker gone) is a great way to enforce rules!

The City needs to clean the streets. The only way to stop idiots from parking on the wrong side of the street is to publicly humiliate the people.

to everyone who embraces alternate side answer these questions:

How come different neighborhoods with the same roads and trees have different amount of days regulation such as midwood twice a week, crown heights 4 times a week and other black neighborhoods? Isnt that discrimination? How come some neighborhoods have no regulations? Has a street sweeper ever picked up anything? Why can’t you park the hour after the sweeper passed when nothing is happening anyway? How come the city can’t hold homeowners responsible for the front of their homes instead of ruining work and chores for the entire world? And last, how come some neighborhoods get a silent acceptance of double parking during it, and others don’t. You can’t find that information officially, and it purely discriminates certain areas where it would really help us out if we were able to do so as well. But who do you even ask? How come other cities dont have it every single week and they manage to stay clean or even unclean. who cares if there are leaves on a residential street, the wind blows it away eventually and someone rakes it up near their house!

The alternate side parking for street cleaning is just a scam to raise revenue for the city. Seriously, do the street cleaners actually clean the streets? Give me a break. They make them dirtier!

By this same theory it should be illegal for the DOT to tow illegaly parked cars before they are properly adjudicated.

The claim that it is dangerous is bogus, because for years they have been placing the stickers on the rear passenger window.

It is an effective method of enforcing street cleaning rules. It also serves a detterent to the thousands of cars in NYC with bogus Pennsylvania and Florida plates who otherwise consider themselves immune to tickets.

People need to obey the law! There are too many inconsiderate drivers. The world does not revolve around you double and triple parkers! Use public transportation for goodness sakes! It’s a sad world when politicians kowtow to instant gratification potential voters, at the expense of more pressing issues.

#21 I don’t live in brooklyn so I shouldn’t care but I do -where I live there is street cleaning at around 2pm but we all have driveways so it is spotless ! But again blocking a driveway which one should NEVER do that warrants a tickets plus a sticker!and a clamp I think ! I have a parking spot off 13ave for work underground -how many times do ppl park there blocking tens of cars entering and exiting the under ground parking ! As a matter of fact I once let out someone’s air from his tire but then regretted it b/c it could have been a close friends or my own mechutens new car ! Who knows!!!! so no more of that ! But if a poor guy over slept -was by a weeding till 4am ??who r they to punish C’mon !! Also david G maybe alt side and garbage collection should be on for 1pm ??? Just yellow buses in the am What do u think ??

Is Greenfield pursuing this new law because a higher percentage of his constituents are habitual traffic law violators in Boro Park, so he wants to help them continue doing what they do but with convenience? These bright stickers have been around for a long time. Not a single car accident has been attributed to them, so the “safety” argument is bogus. I have been driving for a decade now and never had my back windows plastered with these stickers because I don’t violate parking laws.

Just a side note…why don’t they collect garbage on the same days as alternate side? That way no one will get stuck behind garbage trucks.

David you are 100% right. These big yellow stickers are very wrong and extremely hard to remove especially when they rub it in. And anyone that gets a parking summons is innocent until he pays or is found guilty at a hearing. David you are the best thing that happened to the BP and Flatbush area. Thanks again and it was nice meeting you in shul on Yomtov.
