New York, NY – Every New York City resident has heard the story in one form or another: having to circle the neighborhood looking for a parking spot for far longer than should be necessary. A City Council committee Wednesday voted to help end this situation.

The City Council Committee on State and Federal Legislation voted in support of a measure that would allow NYC residential neighborhoods to designate up to 80 percent of their available parking as residents-only.
The bill has been introduced in Albany by state Sen. Daniel Squadron and Assemblymember Joan Millman, both of whom represent Downtown Brooklyn. They would let local community boards decide the issue and require that they hold a public hearing before implementing such parking restrictions.
Permit parking would not be allowed on commercial and metered streets. The bill would also mandate that some spaces be saved for those without permits.
What defines a parking disctrict ? If lm live on 53 st will my permit allow me to park on 56 st ? If not then they only solved the issue of parking on my home block what about my office , a simcha, etc…? The parking conditins will only get worse…
So what happens i come home 1 30 am from a chasene and some one is parked on my paid parking space….call 911.? Mesireh flatten his tires.? Noykem Venoyter
How will this be enforced?
Sucks, If I wanted to pay for parking then I’d pay to park in a garage.
It’s another tax on the middle class
This would be the first normal thing to hit nyc in a long time. We pay the highest fees and taxes in the nation and we we get for it is more regulations more fines and less service. This will help ppl who pay there fare share to park on the same block as there house and not wast half a day to find that spot
In montreal these permits are issued around hospitals, universities and busy areas.
Usually the ppl who live in busy areas request them. The system works very well.
In montreal you have this already only by day not at night every few streets has a number like 27 and only whoever has a 27 sticker could park in this area whenever i travel to montreal im looking for parking at least 30 minutes or more. Hope they dont make it here.
This is a system to generate more money for the city, it is not really all that helpful for residents especially in a dense population area. Guess what most of the cars on your block are owned by … people on your block. What this does is generate more money for the city (for the permit) and guarantees that visitors will pretty much need to park at a garage and pay excessive taxes there (18%). Then the complaints come in that there are no good parking areas for visitors except in very expensive garages .. so the next thing that comes is parking meters and you can’t park there even with a permit.
You will love the first month of this until you come home at 1:30 am from a trip, can’t find any place to park and realize you can’t just park one block over because it is out of your zone and you have to pay to park.
It seems to work just fine in Chicago where they also are able to get a few visitors permits as well
In other cities that already have this, it works like this:
1. Vehicle Registration Sticker color matches the “Restricted Parking” sign color. You and the Meter Maids know if you can park there or not. You look for parking anywhere a sign color matches your sticker. Not guaranteed to be on your block!Area usually assigned by Community Board etc.
2. You can order extra hanging tags for the rear-view mirror to give to guests – and it may get stolen (window broken, tag taken).
3. City opens Municipal Parking lots, small ones, near every area, so others can Pay-to-Park off the street.
4. Violators get towed immediately – no questions asked.
In Boston, it works GREAT!
You will get used to it quickly – and love it.
Some cities give “free” stickers to vehicles registered to that area. I hope NYC does it that way. This eliminates many of the out-of-state vehicle registrations as all those vehicles will have to park in the Community Lot or rent a driveway etc.
Dont they realize there isnt enough spaces for just the residents either!! they will sell out the permits and half the residents wont have anything. and how will anyone go to a wedding at night! or anything at night since you cant park during the night hours. sounds like a weird plan
hello…. this only applies to a few certain areas like those in downtown brooklyn, its not for boro park/flatbush
I hear both sides. I live near kolel store, yeled vyalda / tiferes rifka after 8am its almost impossible to find a parking space. If I have to come home in the afternoon I can circle and circle till I find a spot. On the other hand my job as a therapist takes me to other streets not near my home My car is my office I can’t bike or take a bus where will I park then?
There are a few ways to aliviate some of the parking problems.
Every new hall should have to make basement parking lot. The size would depend on the size of the hall.
Get the school busses off the street after 7pm and on weekends. Some schools have 5 busses parked. this is is 10 parking spaces.
I do sympathize with those who make a driveway in front of their homes. But the problem is now no one can park there even when you are away. Some blocks inBP you can’t park on almost entire blocks.
My biggest problem is with those who have a driveway on the side of their house already and then make a new driveway in middle of their homes. This usually takes away 2 more parking spaces.
#16 says it will apply only to certain areas..hope he/she is correct. If this were to be a city wide program the possibilities for problems are almost limitless. There are neighborhoods where people are always moving in and out. There are areas with dense population because of multi resident dwellings (apartment houses etc). These are two examples of trouble to come.. hopefully it won’t.
Most of you are living in lala land, but where I live we have 5 apartment buildings on the block how is that going to solve anything, oh did I forget to mention that the plan is to charge about $80 for a permit
What about those of us who register our cars out of state to save on car insurance? We wont get parking permits!
I don’t see how this would work. Where I live there are 2 apartment houses, 3 4 family houses and the rest are 2 family houses. On my side of the street I only know of 2 houses where no one has a car. The rest of the private houses have 2-3 cars with one parking space each.
I have a big problem as it is. I do have a driveway which is often blocked. There are times when I can’t get out and times when I can’t get in. I was once rude to someone who blocked my driveway and he couldn’t understand why I couldn’t do a chesed and let someone use my driveway. If you do block someone’s driveay at least leave a phone # where you can be reached. I’ve already gone knocking on neighbors doors to see who blocked my driveway and ended up not going out.
