New York, NY – Bloomberg Says Parking Sticker Punishment Is Good, Lets Keep It.

New York, NY – Mayor Bloomberg was asked about New York City’s unpopular sanitation parking stickers during his weekly appearance on John Gambling’s WOR radio show today.

A Brooklyn councilman has introduced a bill that would ban the stickers, which are placed on cars that violate alternate side parking rules and are incredibly difficult to remove, but Mayor Bloomberg told Mr. Gambling he supports the stickers and he compared people who break the rules to someone murdering their parents and not understanding why they have to go to jail.

“If people are complaining, then we should keep doing it,” Mayor Bloomberg said of the stickers.

Mayor Bloomberg explained to Mr. Gambling that New Yorkers can avoid the stickers entirely by obeying parking regulations.

“I mean–don’t break the law. It’s almost like, you know, you murder your parents and then you say to the judge, ‘But I’m an orphan, you can’t put me in jail.’ Don’t murder your parents, you don’t have, you’re not an orphan, and in this case, don’t break the law you don’t have to worry about it,” Mayor Bloomberg said.

Mayor Bloomberg said he supports the stickers because “the Sanitation Department says it’s even more effective than a fine.” The Mayor clearly has no sympathy for people who break the rules, but he did suggest one potential remedy for those who are up in arms with the stickers.

“If you don’t like the law of cleaning the streets or alternate side, change that, but don’t go break the law,” Mayor Bloomberg said.

The point that hizzonor has missed is that it violates the notion of the presumption of iinnocence. These stickers punish people who may have a valid excuse as to why they are there.

If Mayor Bloomberg likes laws that violate the presumption of innocence then he should find employment in a more autocratic society. But his sentiments do not belong in a freedom loving democracy which values the presumption of innocence – perhaps Cuba, or one of the Islamist countries.

Ok, Mike. I hear you, but let’s have the city pay for the cost and lost time to remove the sticker if the defendant is fount not guilty by a traffic court.

Bloomberg. “You said if you don’t like the law change it” this is exactly what this councilman is trying to do. We don’t like the law that allows to put sticker on ones car. So we are going to “change” this law.

I concure. What a comment like some 1 has murderd his parents. & they say he is a smart man. Then what’s dumb ?
Me personely never understood how he is suppose to be called a good mayor when all he is done is taken with force money out of the pockets from the hard working people of this city. How many times have u seen people get $115. Fines 4 getting stuck in the box & the cops just come dashing out from all 4 corners it looks like a hold up & then the cop tells u don’t worry its no points just pay the fine I can go on & on. He has no idea what it means to strugle to pay your rent. Tuition grocery bills & so on

If you saturate, really soak the sticker with Goo Gone and peel it off there should be no problem removing it. This method was tried and tested by myself about 20 years ago, and it probably still works. As I recall whatever left over residue washed off with soap and a sponge, not a spot was left.

I remember as bochur in BMG – Lakewood, the yeshiva “management” had put these stickers on the yungerleit’s cars parked illegally in the parking lot, (the fire lanes). The way to remove is soak with hot water (from coffee room) and attach another paper on top, then peel off. When they saw it wasn’t helping they started putting “boots” on the cars. Anyone know what they do now.

I see all previous comments don’t get it; as long as ‘car owners’ are against it, as long as it makes life harder for car owners, then I’m for it..

I’ve had parking tickets dismissed countless times. That means every one of those times I got a sticker, I was being “punished” for a “crime” I was found not guilty of. Is that legitimate?

I can understand everyone who speak their opinion in theoretical dialogue and debate. But in contraspect, I can really understand someone who sees all this stuff about simple traffic ordinances day in and day out being thrashed by motorists who have no respect for the law or the public and just do what they feel is comfortable for them and is simply fed up with it. So he makes a sticker ordinance. Is sandaling cars a better solution? How did Mayor Daly say:” This city is just great- it’s the people who are slobs.”
