Israel – Haredi Community Oppose Bill to Take Sundays Off

    14

Israel – A large majority of Israelis support legislation to make Sunday a day off of work in Israel.
A Member of Knesset Zevulun Orlev, proposed the law. He said Israelis need to have both a full day of rest – the Sabbath – and a free day on which to conduct commercial activity and enjoy cultural events.

A poll conducted on Orlev's behalf showed that 56 percent of Israelis support the idea that "Sunday will also be a day off. Only the ultra-Orthodox community opposed the proposed law, with 84 percent of Haredi Jews rejecting the idea of following the secular world's lead regarding which days to rest from work. To echo the words of the first commenter here, Rav Shalom Schwadron ZT”L used to refer to the American Sunday as “Shabbos Sheni shel Goliyus”!!!
I didn’t detect anything deragatory in his tone of voice when he said it.
What in heaven’s name can be wrong with it?

I never knew u could bring a reiyah proof from what u did NOT detect … and from what’s said on a tape just for the sake of a or comical way.

    “Ubechukoseyhem Lo Selechu?
I wear my hat ribbon the regular way”

A: no one is   fault that u or there are vishnitzer who fordreit daas TORAH with ‘chasidus’ (wearing the ribbon…)

And as i mentioned above divrei from one of the greatest poskim (ridva”z) 100 yrs ago there is a clear and legitimate line drawn bw Sunday & chukas aku”m.

    {meaning by AFFICIALLY aclaiming it for a rest-day – (Answer to anon.2:14)}

i think anon.2:18 had the right answer.

I think it would actually be a good thing. This way more secular or traditional Israelis wouldn’t mind going to shul or doing religious things on Shabbos when they also have the opportunity to go to the beach, visit relatives or spend time with their kids on Sunday.

That’s why you should spend Sunday learning. There won’t be any shiloh of Ubechukoseyhem Lo Selechu.

see sefer Nemukei R’dva’z in the h’kdamah written by the r’dvaz of Tzfat – here in America over 100 years ago!
In regards to Sundays in america he claims that by afficialy proclaiming it as a day-of-rest it is included in ‘chukas avoidei zareh’ which is the real source of the sunday rest (the church…)and is in someway worse than the ‘chilul shabbos’ (which was going on throughout chareidi america in those times, see above )!…..

    So far for Daas Torah…

    NISKATNU HADOROS

Today’s ‘day of rest’ is not yener ‘Day of Rest’.

That Day of Rest was the day on which the gentiles claim He rested, as in ‘shovas elokim la’asos, he ceased creating.

Haintiger day of rest is a day on which they rest and watch all the work being done by the NFL and NASCAR.

anyone know what daas torah says on the issue?

    May 28, 2007 1:04 PM

Reminds me of a great exchange I heard between a magid shiur and a talmid – “So what do the Gedolim say about …………”

“I don’t know but I’ll make a deal with you – you tell me who the Gedolim are and I’ll find out what they say!”

I think anon #4 gave us a great link. if i read it correctly, then I would like to clarify that this new proposal is based on the idea that “The law will try to salvage what is left.” closing our eyes and thinking of converting everybody to become extreme chareidy jews is absurd. rather we should strive to make sure that all Jews in Israel are there to stay and happy. we can then hope to see positive results.

if you were to read closely the details of the proposed bill you willnotice that there are two points being made.

besides making sunday an official day of rest, there is the permitting of public transport and therefore all the associated chillul shabbos that will go with it. even though this is being touted as only to be permitted in a limited amount, and presumably in the secular neighbourhoods only. see http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3399527,00.html for the repport on Ynet news

nevertheless, all the chareidim lidevar Hashem who are being so much maligned in the press reports are objecting to that more than the concept of a second day of rest.

there is also the point to note that the proposal is coming from the head of the so called religious party mafdal who once again are showing their true colours when it comes to Ikrei Hadas. so long as there are votes to be gained and power to be achieved in the knesset they wil do almost anything.

Why can’t they just open their stores anyhow? If someone comes in, fine.

Chareidim, who don’t work, are against this bill.

    Makes perfect sense.

Why would an entire population of people who survive on the handouts of people who actually work support an idea that leaves them with one less day of earnings to mooch?
