Henry I. Sobel, who for more than 30 years led the Sao Paulo Jewish Congregation, was sentenced, said Michael Edmondson, a spokesman for the State Attorney's Office in Palm Beach County.
Sobel will be allowed to serve the community service in Brazil, but it was not specified where he has to take the anti-shoplifting course, Edmondson said.

Sobel was arrested in March on three counts of theft for allegedly stealing $680 worth of ties from several upscale stores in Palm Beach, Fla, as was reported here on Vos Iz Neias.

Sobel temporarily resigned as head of South America's largest Jewish synagogue following the arrest, and spent several days hospitalized at Sao Paulo's Albert Einstein Hospital after taking large quantities of sleeping drugs, according to doctors. [AP]
